Xiaomi has recently introduced a two new series of smartphones at a press event in New Delhi, India. The new Redmi Y1 is a selfie-centric smartphone while the Redmi Y1 lite is more of a budget-friendly smartphone. The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 features a 5.5inch HD IPS (720×1280 pixels) display, powered by 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The storage expansion is available via microSD card for up to 128GB. The phone is backed up by 3,000mAh battery and runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with MIUI 9 skin on top.The company claims that the device offers 35 hours of battery life on a single charge. The fingerprint scanner is embedded on the rear panel. The Redmi Y1 is also available in two memory and storage variants; a 3GB/32GB variant and 4GB/64GB variant. The handset is available in two color options; Gold and Dark Gray

As for the camera, the Redmi Y1 packs a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF. On the front, there is a 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED Flash. Additionally, the device also includes Beautify 3.0 feature to enhance the selfies.

The Redmi Y1 lite looks like a toned down version of the Redmi Y1. The devices comes with a 5.5-inch HD IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor accompanied by 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage. The storage can be further expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card. It is also backed up by the same 3080mAh battery however it only manages to last for 34 hours which is relatively low as compared with Redmi Y1. It operates on Android 7.1 Nougat with Miui 9 skin running on top. A bit surprising that this phone lacks a fingerprint sensor which can be a major deal breaker for some users.

Coming to the camera department, the devices feature a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, 1.12micron pixel and LED flash. On the front, the devices comes with a 5MP secondary camera for capturing selfies.

The Redmi Y1 comes with a price tag of Rs 8,999(approx Rs.14,500) for the 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant and Rs.10, 999(approx Rs.18,000) for the 4GB/64GB storage variant. While the Redmi Y1 lite comes with a price tag of Rs.6,999(approx Rs.12,000) only.

Both handsets will be an Amazon India exclusive and will go on sale on November 8. Afterwards, it will be available at Mi retail stores and partners.

Verdict

Both the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 lite brings a beautiful design and offers decent specs at an affordable price tag. But the Redmi Y1 easily takes the cake here with its huge 16MP secondary camera and bigger RAM/Storage options.
